Kevin’s Kalans, Latvia, Master’s degree in fashion styling and visual marketing
I come from Latvia, but it was in the Netherlands that I took my master’s degree in architecture. The move to Milan was the next step – an opportunity to improve my design from a completely new perspective.
My time at Domus Academy has been characterized by development, discovery and creative exploration. I was particularly attracted by Domus Academy because of its practical, industry-oriented approach. The training combines theoretical knowledge with real projects and collaborations, creating an environment that feels closely linked to the reality of the creative industry.
One of the aspects I value most is the possibility of cooperating with people from different countries, cultures and professional backgrounds. Working in such an international environment has challenged me to adapt, communicate and look at creativity from different perspectives.
What I have appreciated most during this journey has been to learn from the teaching profession and industry professionals. Their experience, insights and passion have constantly inspired me and helped me broaden my understanding of fashion, brand-building, visual communication and creative management.
My decision to switch from architecture to architecture fashion styling and visual marketing came from a long-standing curiosity about narrative, feelings and human expression. In architecture, I was always interested in creating an atmosphere and shaping emotions through the room.
Through fashion, styling and visual narrative, I discovered another way to explore identity, culture and emotions. Today I see my work as a hybrid form of narrative that combines the spatial thinking of architecture with the emotional and cultural dimensions of fashion.
I feel that Domus Academy has helped me develop this vision and given me the tools to reconcile these disciplines in a meaningful way. In addition to the academy itself, Milan has played a crucial role in my experience. Participating in Design Week projects, creating installations, visiting fashion shows, museums and private villas, and discovering creative industries beyond the fashion world – including the perfume world – have continually broadened my perspective and inspired new ideas.
To me, Milan is a city full of discoveries. The more curious, active and open you are, the more opportunities the city reveals. My time here has shown me that some of the most valuable experiences often come from stepping outside their comfort zone and taking advantage of unexpected opportunities.
