In May, students of NABA’s bachelor’s programme in Set Design (scenography) were given the opportunity to explore this particular subject. In a collaboration with FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano.

This was done at the historic palace Palazzo Moroni in Bergamo, northeast of Milan, and was part of the “Seta” – the leading event dedicated to silk, a fabric that strongly characterized both the region’s cultural heritage and the history of the Moroni family.

The students took on three of the grand rooms of the palace from the 1800s – Salottoino Cinese, Sala Turca and Sala Rosa – where they carefully analyzed original wall decorations, furniture and textiles. The task? To interpret these historical details in a modern way by designing and making decorative folding screens. The screens, traditionally dressed in silk, were chosen for their strong connection to both the orientalism that influenced the European interior ideals during the late 1700s and to Palazzo Moroni’s unique identity.

With the support of experts, the students created six unique folding screens, presented in the palace’s large ballroom – each work a personal interpretation where history, innovation and creative vision meet.

Curious about the result? Browse the gallery and discover how the future designer brings new life to silk’s timeless elegance.
