Students from the Bachelor’s Programme in fashion design at NABA’s Milan campus, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, has reinterpreted the most iconic and rebellious boots from the well-known English brand Dr. Martens.

In a special project in collaboration with Dr. Martens, the first brand to have designed and implemented to support the young creativity of future designers at an Italian academy, got four classes from the Fashion Setting course at BA in fashion design (Styling & Communication Specialization) the opportunity to work with a legendary fashion creation and renew it through the most contemporary themes and inspirations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzCiLOIbLAY Under the leadership of the lecturers Ivan Bontchev, Annie Lerner and Alberto Zalletti, NABA students reinterpreted the rebellious spirit of Dr. Martens shoes and used their creativity on the most current topics today: from environmental sustainability in fashion to potential applications of artificial intelligence in future styling.

The most iconic silhouettes of the brand, such as the cherry red 1460 and 1461, became the empty cloth for these young creators to express themselves and convey striking messages, both individual and collective, by working with environmentally friendly and pioneering materials and techniques at the intersection of fashion, art and communication. From condemning racism to celebrating underground culture and the rebellious aesthetics of the historical punk and Ska movements, the legendary boots were reshaped with the help of the creativity of young talent. The iconic boots were transformed into a powerful and surprising tool for awareness, freedom of expression and social change, challenging all stereotypes and prejudices for a more inclusive future.

NABA Students Reinterpret the Iconic Dr. Martens Boots 2

From the first concept to the final execution, NABA students have taken all steps in the process of creating Dr. Martens shoe models to give life to their original and visionary creations. Since the 1960s, Dr. Marten’s boots have become a symbol of rebellion and independence, with their simple lines perfect for adaptation and the powerful attitude of street fashion. With bold soles enlarged with silicone foam and romantic, dreamy decorations with feathers, ribbons and pearls, students showed an extraordinary ability to understand and reinterpret the rebellious brand par excellence, which is now at the forefront of promoting the creativity and talent of young designers worldwide.

With mentoring from NABA and Dr. The Martens team developed the students, who were divided into several groups, prototypes of their creations and conducted professional styling and photography sessions. The selected winning projects were then presented to the industry press using a special communication campaign.
